Robert Francis Kenley Obituary

GASTONIA, NC- "Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is." (Jeremiah 17.7) Robert Francis Kenley (Bob) trusted in his Lord Jesus Christ and joined Him in Heaven on Friday evening, February 1, 2019. Born in Mecklenburg County on December 20, 1922, Bob was the last of ten siblings and a son of the late Wynne L. and Ora Lane Kenley.
In addition to his parents, he is now reunited with his beloved wife of 69 1/2 years, Dorothy Haynes Kenley; his son, Robert Michael "Mike" Kenley; his sister, Edna Summerville; and his brothers, George, Charles, Jack, Alfred, Harry, Woody, J.C., and Willard Kenley.
Bob attended school in Gastonia before joining the US Navy during World War II. Stationed in Brooklyn, NY, he worked at the US Armed Guard Center before deployment on the cargo ship Felix Taussig, and later on the USS Bordelon destroyer. After the war, he returned to Gastonia and worked in his dad's grocery store before attending Evans Business School and beginning a career with Plantation Pipeline company, where he worked for 30 years before his retirement.
Bob and Dot and their children attended West Avenue Presbyterian Church in Gastonia for many years, where he served as a deacon and an elder. After moving to Clover in 1974, he moved his membership to Bethel Presbyterian Church, where he served as Sunday School teacher, deacon, elder, trustee, and elder emeritus. A master wood craftsman, Bob fashioned beautiful furniture and crafts and also enjoyed being outdoors, gardening, and working with his tractor. His mind remained sharp, and he retained his intellect and sense of humor until the very end of his life here on this Earth.
Family and loved ones who cherish his memory and will meet him in Heaven someday include his daughters and son-in-law, Toni K. Pasour, Stephania and Leonard Morgan; his daughter-in-law, Barbara S. Kenley; his grandchildren, Jason Kenley, Michael and Kris Kenley, Heather and Carl Paulson, Matthew and Monica Morgan, Laurie and Alex Allred, and Mandy Leigh; his great-grandchildren, Max, Henry, and Annie Paulson, Mabel Kenley, Andrew Morgan, Kenley and Caroline Allred, and Morgan and Tatum Leigh; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dan and Natha Haynes; and his dear friends and caregivers, Linda Sexton and Nancy Chappell.
A service to celebrate Bob's life, officiated by Reverend Marcus Van Vlake, will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 5, 2019, at McLean Funeral Directors , 700 N. New Hope Rd., Gastonia, NC. Family will receive friends and loved ones following the service until 8:00 p.m. Burial will be private for the family.
